How to Overseed Your Lawn

It’s that time of year again: time to over-seed with Paydirt Compost!

We’ve been getting a lot of calls in the office regarding overseeding, when to do it, and the best practices. We’ve got the answers!

Overseeding can be done anytime but the early spring and the fall are best for maximizing the impact on your lawn, with fall being the most optimal. Our OMRI-LIsted for Organic Use Paydirt Compost is fine enough to settle into the soil without smothering your existing lawn. Just a thin layer of 1/4” - 1/2” of material spread evenly across your problem areas is all you need! The compost will have an immediate impact during the fall growing season, and will also feed your soil through the winter and have your lawn ready to pop come spring. If you are spreading a thin layer, you’ll want to spread the seed beneath the compost; if you are laying down a thicker amount (greater that 1/2”) you’ll want to spread the seed on top of the compost.

The same rules apply if you are planning a larger aeration project. After aeration, spread your seed and then apply the compost on top. This will allow the seeds and compost to fill the aeration holes and integrate into the soil at a faster rate. If you are planning on applying a thicker layer of compost, spread the seeds on top.

And that’s it! Overseeding is a fantastic way to keep your lawn looking great, with a minimal amount of product and labor. Your lawn with thank you!
